English Interpretation:

Xin (心) is one of the most fundamental words in the Chinese classics. Depending on the context, it may refer to the physical heart, the center of thought and emotion, the human spirit, or one's true nature. Rather than representing a single concept, Xin forms the foundation of Chinese philosophy, moral cultivation, and spiritual practice.

Confucianism emphasizes the cultivation and rectification of the heart. Daoism teaches emptiness and inner stillness. Chinese Buddhism further develops the study of Xin through the exploration of mind and true nature. Although each tradition approaches Xin differently, all regard it as central to understanding human life.
