There is no single English equivalent for 天.
Unlike the Western concept of God, Tiān is not necessarily a personal deity. It may describe the natural world, the moral order of the universe, the source of legitimacy, or the principle underlying human life and society.
IAK therefore recommends selecting the English translation according to context rather than adopting a single fixed equivalent. In philosophical discussions, retaining the transliterated form Tian may sometimes best preserve the original concept.
