The Journey North

This summer, we travelled north from Switzerland through Norway, crossing fjords, forests, the Arctic Circle, and finally reaching the North Cape, the northernmost part of mainland Europe. It became more than a journey across landscapes—it was an opportunity to observe nature, society, and the ways in which civilization shapes everyday life.

Beyond the Arctic Circle

Crossing the Arctic Circle was unlike any other geographical milestone. During summer, daylight seemed endless. Time gradually lost its usual rhythm, and only the routine of meals reminded us that another day had quietly passed.

Silence and the Guqin

Throughout the journey, I carried my guqin with me. Whenever I found a quiet place by the sea, in the mountains, or beside a river, I would stop and play. There was no audience, only the sound of the wind, the waves, and distant seabirds. In such stillness, even the quietest notes could be heard clearly.

Living with Nature

Throughout the journey, nature was never separated from daily life. Forests, rivers, mountains, and coastlines were not simply landscapes but part of the way people lived. Nature was respected rather than conquered.

Heritage and Living Tradition

Historic manor houses, family-owned hotels, and carefully preserved buildings reflected a living tradition rather than a preserved past. Heritage remained part of everyday life, carrying history forward from one generation to the next.

The Art of Living

Throughout the journey, what impressed me most was not luxury, but the quiet quality of everyday life. From architecture and food to public spaces and hospitality, everything reflected a balance between simplicity, functionality, and respect for people.

The Power of Civilization

Throughout the journey, one question stayed with me: how did a land that was once cold, remote, and difficult become one of the world's most orderly and prosperous societies? Geography shapes the beginning of a place, but civilization shapes its future. Lasting prosperity is not created by wealth alone, but by the civilization that sustains it.

Coming Home

回家

Every journey eventually comes to an end. What remains is not only photographs or memories of beautiful places, but also new ways of seeing the world. Observing another civilization is also a way of reflecting upon our own.
