English Interpretation:

Zhōng / Zhòng (中) is a fundamental concept in classical Chinese thought. Its meaning extends far beyond the simple idea of “the middle.”

Zhōng refers to the center, centrality, or an inner state free from deviation.

Zhòng carries the sense of hitting the mark, being appropriate, fitting, or exactly right.

In the Zhongyong, these two meanings reveal an important relationship between inner state and outward expression. Zhōng refers to an inner state of centeredness and freedom from deviation, while zhòng describes a response that is fitting, appropriate, and exactly right. When emotions and actions are expressed in this way, they give rise to Harmony (和).

In this sense, Zhong is the inner ground, while Harmony is its expression and function. Zhong does not require the suppression of emotion, nor does it mean compromising between two extremes. It means remaining centered within while responding to life in a fitting and appropriate way.

This is also expressed in the idea of “斋庄中正、至诚之道” — inner composure and dignity, centered uprightness, and utmost sincerity. Cultivation begins from within and becomes visible through appropriate conduct in everyday life.

The same character 中 appears in Zhongguo (中国), China. Historically, Zhong in Zhongguo referred to the central states or central realm and developed through changing geographical, political, and cultural contexts. This historical meaning should not be directly equated with the philosophical Zhong of the Zhongyong.

Nevertheless, the rich meanings carried by the character Zhong make it an important key to understanding the Chinese language, Chinese classics, and traditional Chinese culture.

中文释义:

中是中国经典思想中的基础概念之一,其含义远远超过“中间”。

**中(zhōng)**表示中央、居中,也可以表示内在中正、不偏失的状态;

Translation Note | 翻译说明:

There is no single English equivalent for Zhong.

The character is commonly translated as Middle, Center, Mean, or Centrality, but none fully conveys its classical meaning.

The conventional English title of the Zhongyong is The Doctrine of the Mean. However, Mean should not be understood simply as an average, compromise, or middle position between two extremes.

The two pronunciations are important: zhōng emphasizes center and centeredness, while zhòng carries the sense of hitting the mark or being exactly appropriate.

IAK therefore recommends retaining Zhong when the full philosophical concept is intended and selecting an English translation according to context.

“中”没有唯一对应的英文词汇。

常见译法包括 Middle、Center、Mean、Centrality,但都不能完整表达经典中“中”的含义。

《中庸》通行的英文书名是 The Doctrine of the Mean,但这里的 Mean 不应简单理解为平均、折中或两个极端之间的中间位置。

Zhōng 强调中央、居中与内在中正;zhòng 则强调命中、合宜、得当与恰到好处。

因此,IAK 建议在表达完整哲学概念时保留 Zhong,并根据具体语境选择相应的英文解释。

Classical Source:

The Doctrine of the Mean《中庸》

喜怒哀乐之未发,谓之中;发而皆中节,谓之和。

Before joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure arise, the inner state is called Zhong. When they arise and all hit the proper measure, this is called Harmony.

中也者,天下之大本也;和也者,天下之达道也。

Zhong is the fundamental ground of the world; Harmony is the Dao through which it is expressed and brought into action.

致中和,天地位焉,万物育焉。

When Zhong and Harmony are fully realized, the natural order is established, and all living things flourish.
