English Interpretation:

Lǐ (礼) is one of the central concepts in Confucian thought and one of the foundations of traditional Chinese civilization. China has long been known as "the Land of Propriety and Ritual," a tradition rooted in the classical concept of Li.

Although commonly translated as Rites or Ritual Propriety, Li extends far beyond ceremonies or etiquette. It refers to the principles, norms, and practices that cultivate harmonious relationships between individuals, families, communities, and society.

The essential purpose of Li is harmony. It helps regulate human relationships, resolve conflicts, cultivate respect and humility, and maintain social order. In this sense, Li is not merely an external form of behavior, but a lifelong practice of self-cultivation and harmonious living.

In traditional Chinese education, learning begins with Li. By studying and practicing Li, one overcomes arrogance, develops humility and respect, and gradually cultivates the character of a Junzi. Li also forms the moral foundation of the Six Arts, making it an essential part of lifelong education and personal cultivation.

Its meaning should always be understood within its textual and historical context.

Translation Note | 翻译说明:

There is no single English equivalent for Li.

Although Rites, Ritual Propriety, and Propriety are the most common translations, none fully conveys the richness of the original concept. In classical Chinese, Li encompasses ritual, ethics, education, social order, personal cultivation, and the principles that create harmony in human relationships.

IAK therefore recommends selecting the English translation according to context rather than adopting a single fixed equivalent. In philosophical discussions or when preserving the original meaning of classical Chinese texts, retaining the transliterated form Li is often the most accurate choice.
