Dao (Dào) is one of the most fundamental concepts in classical Chinese thought. In traditional Chinese texts, the character Dao carries three primary meanings.
First, it refers to a road or pathway on which people travel. As Shuowen Jiezi explains, "Dao means a road or path."
Second, it refers to principles, laws, methods, or proper rules of conduct. In this sense, Dao represents the underlying order governing nature, human society, morality, or practical affairs.
Third, Dao refers to the metaphysical reality beyond all forms. As stated in the Book of Changes, "The metaphysical is called Dao; the physical is called material forms." In this highest philosophical sense, Dao denotes the ultimate principle from which all things arise and according to which all things transform.
Its meaning should always be understood within its textual and historical context.

Unlike the English word Way, Dao carries multiple layers of meaning in classical Chinese. It may refer to a physical road, a governing principle, a method of action, or the ultimate metaphysical reality beyond all forms.
IAK therefore recommends selecting the English translation according to context rather than adopting a single fixed equivalent. In philosophical discussions or when preserving the original meaning of classical Chinese texts, retaining the transliterated form Dao is often the most accurate choice.
