The Transmission of Buddhism from India to China

The transmission of Buddhism from India to China was not a single event but a centuries-long process of cultural exchange. Through both the Silk Road and maritime trade routes, Buddhist scriptures, monks, and ideas gradually entered China and profoundly influenced the development of Chinese civilization.
公元二世纪左右,贵霜帝国(Kushan Empire)崛起于中亚与印度西北部地区。贵霜王朝大力支持佛教的发展,其中最著名的统治者是迦腻色迦王(Kanishka)。在其支持下,佛教获得新的发展机遇,并进一步向中亚和东亚传播。
Around the second century CE, the Kushan Empire emerged in Central Asia and northwestern India. The Kushan rulers became important patrons of Buddhism, particularly Emperor Kanishka, under whose reign Buddhism experienced renewed growth and expanded further into Central and East Asia.

During the same period, Mahayana Buddhism continued to develop. Nāgārjuna, active during the second and third centuries, formulated the Madhyamaka philosophy, which became one of the most influential schools of Mahayana thought. Later, the brothers Asanga and Vasubandhu further developed Yogācāra philosophy, creating another major tradition within Mahayana Buddhism.

As Buddhism flourished, exchanges between India and China became increasingly active. Chinese monks traveled to India in search of authentic teachings, while Indian monks journeyed to China to spread the Dharma.
东晋时期,法显(Faxian)远赴印度求法,历时十余年,携带大量经典返回中国。唐代玄奘(Xuanzang)西行取经十七年,系统学习印度佛教,并带回大量经论,成为中印文化交流史上的重要人物。其后,义净(Yijing)也前往印度及南海诸国求学,对保存印度佛教资料作出了重要贡献。
During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the monk Faxian traveled to India and returned with numerous Buddhist texts after more than a decade abroad. During the Tang Dynasty, Xuanzang spent seventeen years studying in India and brought back a vast collection of scriptures and commentaries, becoming one of the most influential figures in the history of Sino-Indian cultural exchange. Later, Yijing also journeyed to India and Southeast Asia, preserving valuable records of Buddhist life and scholarship.

At the same time, many Indian monks traveled to China to teach and translate Buddhist scriptures. Among them, Bodhidharma is especially revered as the First Patriarch of Chan (Zen) Buddhism in China. Through extensive translation efforts, Buddhist teachings became deeply integrated into Chinese culture and contributed to the emergence of distinct Chinese Buddhist traditions.
到了八世纪以后,密教(Esoteric Buddhism)也逐渐传入中国和西藏。与此同时,佛教在印度本土逐渐走向衰落。十二世纪以后,随着伊斯兰势力进入印度,许多佛教寺院遭到破坏,佛教在其发源地逐渐消失,而在中国、西藏、日本、韩国和东南亚等地继续发展并传承至今。
From the eighth century onward, Esoteric Buddhism was introduced into China and Tibet. Meanwhile, Buddhism gradually declined in India. After the twelfth century, with the expansion of Islamic rule in the Indian subcontinent, many Buddhist monasteries disappeared, and Buddhism largely faded from its homeland. Nevertheless, it continued to flourish in China, Tibet, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia, where its traditions remain vibrant today.

The introduction of Buddhism into China represents one of the most important chapters in the history of cultural exchange between China and India. It is generally believed that commercial and cultural contacts between China, Central Asia, and India had already developed during the Qin and Han periods, creating favorable conditions for the transmission of Buddhism.
在佛教传统文献中,保存着关于佛教早期传入中国的多种记载。其中较为著名的说法见于《历代三宝纪》等佛教史籍,记载秦始皇时期曾有来自西域的僧人来到中国传法。由于年代久远,相关史料较为有限,今天已难以完全考证这些事件的具体经过。然而,这些传统记载反映出中国与西域、印度之间可能早已存在某种形式的文化接触与交流。
Buddhist historical sources preserve various accounts concerning the earliest transmission of Buddhism to China. One well-known tradition, recorded in later Buddhist chronicles, relates that monks from the Western Regions arrived in China during the reign of Qin Shi Huang. Owing to the great antiquity of these events and the limited historical materials available today, it is difficult to reconstruct their precise details. Nevertheless, such traditions suggest that cultural contacts between China, Central Asia, and India may have begun earlier than is commonly assumed.
关于佛教正式传入中国,最广为流传的记载发生在东汉明帝时期。相传汉明帝夜梦金人,遂派遣使者蔡愔等十八人前往西域求法。使团抵达大月氏后,迎请迦叶摩腾(Kāśyapa Mātaṅga)与竺法兰(Dharmaratna)两位高僧东来中国。
The most famous account of Buddhism's official introduction to China dates to the reign of Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han Dynasty. According to tradition, Emperor Ming dreamed of a golden figure and subsequently dispatched an embassy led by Cai Yin to the Western Regions in search of Buddhist teachings. The mission returned accompanied by the monks Kāśyapa Mātaṅga and Dharmaratna.
两位高僧来到洛阳后,居住于白马寺(White Horse Temple),并译出《四十二章经》。白马寺因此被后世尊称为中国第一座佛教寺院,而《四十二章经》也被视为中国现存最早的佛教译典之一。
After arriving in Luoyang, the two monks resided at the White Horse Temple and translated the Sutra in Forty-Two Sections. For this reason, the White Horse Temple is traditionally regarded as the first Buddhist temple in China, while the Sutra in Forty-Two Sections is considered one of the earliest Buddhist scriptures translated into Chinese.

During the late Eastern Han and Three Kingdoms periods, Buddhism developed rapidly in China. An Shigao, a monk from the Parthian Empire, arrived in Luoyang and translated numerous Buddhist scriptures, becoming one of the pioneers of Buddhist translation in China. He was followed by translators such as Lokaksema, who introduced important Mahayana scriptures and teachings to Chinese audiences.
三国时期,康僧会(Kang Senghui)在东吴弘扬佛法,深受孙权礼遇;支谦(Zhi Qian)则以渊博学识和卓越译才闻名于世。通过这些高僧和译经家的努力,佛教逐渐被中国社会所认识和接受,并开始与中国传统文化展开深入对话。
During the Three Kingdoms period, Kang Senghui actively promoted Buddhism in the Kingdom of Wu and enjoyed the patronage of Sun Quan. Zhi Qian became renowned for his scholarship and translation work. Through the efforts of these monks and translators, Buddhism gradually gained acceptance within Chinese society and began a long process of interaction with traditional Chinese culture.
从东汉到三国时期,佛教虽然仍被视为来自西域和印度的新思想,但其传播基础已经初步形成。此后数百年间,佛教不断与儒家、道家思想相互交流,并逐渐发展出具有鲜明中国特色的佛教传统。
Although Buddhism was still regarded as a foreign teaching during the Eastern Han and Three Kingdoms periods, the foundations of its transmission had already been established. Over the following centuries, Buddhism entered into continuous dialogue with Confucianism and Daoism, eventually giving rise to distinctive forms of Chinese Buddhism.

Following its introduction into China, Buddhism underwent several centuries of development before becoming an integral part of Chinese civilization. This transformation was made possible through the efforts of many distinguished monks and scholars, among whom Fotudeng, Kumārajīva, Dao'an, Huiyuan, and Sengzhao played particularly significant roles.
东晋十六国时期,来自西域的高僧佛图澄(Fotudeng)来到中国弘法。他以高深的修行和广博的学识受到广泛尊敬,培养了大批弟子,为佛教在北方地区的发展奠定了重要基础。
During the Sixteen Kingdoms period, the monk Fotudeng from the Western Regions traveled to China and became one of the most influential Buddhist teachers of his time. Through his scholarship, spiritual practice, and teaching activities, he laid an important foundation for the growth of Buddhism in northern China.
在中国佛教发展史上,鸠摩罗什(Kumārajīva)的贡献尤为突出。他出生于龟兹(Kucha),精通印度佛教经典与哲学。经过漫长而曲折的经历,最终于后秦时期来到长安,并受到后秦君主姚兴的隆重礼遇。
Among all the early Buddhist masters, Kumārajīva occupies a particularly important position. Born in Kucha, he was deeply versed in Buddhist scriptures and philosophy. After many years of political turmoil and hardship, he eventually arrived in Chang'an during the Later Qin Dynasty, where he was welcomed and supported by Emperor Yao Xing.
在姚兴的大力支持下,鸠摩罗什主持了中国历史上规模空前的译经事业。数千名僧俗学者参与译场工作,他所翻译的《金刚经》《法华经》《中论》《百论》等经典,对中国佛教的发展产生了深远影响。其译文流畅优美,至今仍被广泛诵读和研究。
With the support of the Later Qin court, Kumārajīva presided over one of the most remarkable translation projects in Chinese history. Thousands of monks and lay scholars participated in the work. His translations, including the Diamond Sutra, the Lotus Sutra, and key Madhyamaka texts, profoundly influenced the future development of Chinese Buddhism. Their clarity and literary elegance continue to be admired today.
与此同时,中国本土高僧也开始积极吸收和阐发佛教思想。道安(Dao'an)致力于整理僧团制度和经典目录,被誉为中国佛教制度建设的重要奠基者。慧远(Huiyuan)在庐山创建东林寺,提倡净土信仰,并推动佛教与中国社会的融合。
At the same time, Chinese monks began to interpret and develop Buddhist teachings within their own cultural context. Dao'an played a crucial role in organizing the monastic community and cataloguing Buddhist scriptures, while Huiyuan founded the Donglin Monastery on Mount Lu and became an important advocate of Pure Land practice.
鸠摩罗什门下弟子僧肇(Sengzhao)则是中国佛教思想史上的杰出代表。他所著《肇论》吸收了《老子》《庄子》的思想表达方式,以中国哲学语言阐释般若空观,对后世中国佛教哲学产生了深远影响。
Among Kumārajīva's disciples, Sengzhao stands out as one of the most influential thinkers in Chinese Buddhist history. His work, the Zhao Lun (Treatises of Sengzhao), employed concepts familiar to Chinese readers and drew upon the language of Daoist philosophy to explain the profound insights of Prajñā (Wisdom) and Emptiness.
通过这些高僧的共同努力,佛教逐渐摆脱了“外来宗教”的形象,开始与中国传统思想展开深入对话,并为后来天台宗、华严宗、禅宗和净土宗等中国佛教宗派的形成奠定了思想基础。
Through the efforts of these masters, Buddhism gradually moved beyond its status as a foreign religion and entered into a deep dialogue with Chinese intellectual traditions. This process laid the foundations for the emergence of distinctly Chinese Buddhist schools such as Tiantai, Huayan, Chan, and Pure Land Buddhism.
