子曰:

知之者不如好之者,

好之者不如乐之者。

子曰:

夫仁者,

己欲立而立人,

己欲达而达人。

能近取譬,

可谓仁之方也已。


English Interpretation

The sixth chapter of The Analects, Yong Ye, continues the discussion of character, learning, and human development.

Throughout this chapter, Confucius speaks about different students and different kinds of excellence. Some possess talent, some possess wisdom, and some possess remarkable moral character.

Yet beneath these examples lies a deeper question:

What does it mean to truly live a life of humanity?

Confucius first reminds us that learning itself has different levels.

To know something is valuable.

To love learning is even better.

But the highest stage is to find joy in it.

When learning becomes a source of genuine delight rather than obligation, growth becomes natural and lasting.

The same principle applies to virtue.

True humanity is not merely a personal achievement.

It is not enough to improve ourselves alone.

Confucius teaches:

“If you wish to establish yourself, help others establish themselves. If you wish to succeed, help others succeed.”

Human flourishing is not a competition.

Our own growth becomes meaningful when it contributes to the growth of others.

For Confucius, this is the practical path of ren—humanity in action.


Reflection

Modern society often encourages individual success.

We are taught to focus on personal achievement, personal goals, and personal advancement.

Yet Confucius offers a different perspective.

A meaningful life is not measured only by what we accomplish for ourselves.

It is also measured by the opportunities we create for others.

The best teachers help their students grow.

The best leaders help their teams succeed.

The best parents help their children flourish.

The best friends encourage one another to become better people.

Success that benefits only ourselves is limited.

Success that elevates others creates lasting value.

This is why Confucius regarded humanity not as an abstract ideal, but as a practical way of living.


Modern Chinese Interpretation

《论语》第六章《雍也》,通过许多人物与故事,进一步说明孔子所说的仁德如何落实于现实人生。

孔子谈到冉雍的才能,赞赏颜回的修养,也讨论学习、品格与做人处世的原则。

然而贯穿全篇的核心问题只有一个:

什么是真正的仁?

孔子首先告诉我们,学习有不同层次。

“知之者不如好之者,好之者不如乐之者。”

知道道理固然重要,

喜欢学习更进一步,

而最高的境界,是以学习为乐。

当学习成为一种发自内心的喜悦时,成长便不再是一种负担。

随后,孔子进一步说明仁的实践。

“己欲立而立人,己欲达而达人。”

自己希望有所成就,

也帮助别人有所成就;

自己希望得到发展,

也帮助别人得到发展。

这就是仁的道路。

真正的仁,并不是只关心自己。

也不是一味牺牲自己。

而是在成就自己的同时,也成就他人。

这种推己及人的精神,

正是孔子思想中最重要的实践智慧。

真正的成功,

不在于自己走得多高,

而在于有多少人因为你而变得更好。
