The first “Lanting Yaji” Chinese Calligraphy Cultural Event in Switzerland was held at the China Cultural Center in Bern. Surrounded by brushwork, guqin music, and the fragrance of tea, Swiss and Chinese audiences gathered to experience the refined spirit of Eastern aesthetics and Chinese literati culture.

“Lanting Yaji” is a global cultural initiative launched by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China. Centered around Chinese calligraphy and enriched by guqin music, Gongfu tea, and the tradition of literati gatherings, the event offered a multidimensional encounter with the beauty of harmony, nature, and artistic cultivation in Chinese culture.

More than 1,700 years ago, the great calligrapher Wang Xizhi composed the celebrated Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Gathering, making “Lanting” a lasting symbol of friendship, artistic expression, harmony with nature, and spiritual freedom in Chinese literati tradition. Today, this timeless cultural spirit found new resonance in Switzerland.

The exhibition featured more than seventy original works by calligraphy enthusiasts in Switzerland, representing various script styles including regular, running, cursive, clerical, and seal script, reflecting the growing appreciation of Chinese calligraphy in Switzerland.

On May 22, 2026, Ambassador Qian Minjian attended the opening ceremony and exchanged warmly with local calligraphy enthusiasts, encouraging more Swiss friends to engage with and appreciate Chinese culture. Representatives of the IAK Swiss Asia Cultural Association also participated in the opening ceremony and presented live guqin performances, which beautifully complemented the Gongfu tea presentation of the gathering, creating an atmosphere of refined Eastern literati aesthetics through music, tea, and calligraphy.

The event was organized by the China Cultural Center in Bern, with Leyuting Calligraphy Studio Geneva and the IAK Culture Association as co-organizers. The exhibition will remain open until June 22, 2026.

Through calligraphy, guqin music, and tea culture, “Lanting Yaji” not only presented the beauty of Chinese traditional aesthetics, but also continued to build new bridges of cultural dialogue and mutual understanding between China and Switzerland.
