English Interpretation:
Rén (仁) is one of the central concepts in Confucian thought and forms, together with Yi (义) and Li (礼), the foundation of Confucius' teaching.
The character Ren is traditionally understood as the relationship between two people, representing harmonious human relationships. In modern Chinese, it is commonly associated with love, benevolence, and universal compassion.
In the Analects, the meaning of Ren may be understood from three perspectives.
First, Ren is the nature of humanity, expressing the goodness inherent in human beings.
Second, Ren is the proper way of being human, realized by following the example of the sages and living according to the Dao.
Third, Ren is the highest fulfillment of human life, representing the ultimate achievement of moral cultivation and the state of supreme goodness.
Its meaning should always be understood within its textual and historical context.

There is no single English equivalent for Ren.
Although Benevolence, Humaneness, and Humanity are commonly used translations, none fully conveys the richness of the original concept. In classical Chinese, Ren encompasses human relationships, moral cultivation, compassion, and the highest realization of one's humanity.
IAK therefore recommends selecting the English translation according to context rather than adopting a single fixed equivalent. In philosophical discussions or when preserving the original meaning of classical Chinese texts, retaining the transliterated form Ren is often the most accurate choice.
