English Interpretation:
Yì (艺) originally referred to knowledge, learning, and practical skills. In ancient Chinese education, it encompassed every field related to intellectual, moral, artistic, scientific, and physical cultivation.
The most representative expression of Yi is the Six Arts, which together formed the foundation of classical Chinese education. Rather than representing six isolated subjects, they constituted a comprehensive educational system that cultivated moral character, intellectual ability, artistic appreciation, scientific understanding, physical discipline, and practical competence.
In the Analects, Confucius said, "Set your aspiration upon the Dao, establish yourself through De, rely on Ren, and find fulfillment through Yi." Here, Yi represents the lifelong pursuit of learning, self-cultivation, and the mastery of knowledge and skills.
Its meaning should always be understood within its textual and historical context.
Translation Note | 翻译说明:
There is no single English equivalent for Yi.
Although Art or Arts is the most common translation, it reflects only a small part of the original meaning. In classical Chinese, Yi refers broadly to learning, knowledge, practical skills, and personal cultivation. The traditional Six Arts represent the major domains of education rather than artistic activities alone.
IAK therefore recommends selecting the English translation according to context rather than adopting a single fixed equivalent. In philosophical discussions or when preserving the original meaning of classical Chinese texts, retaining the transliterated form Yi is often the most accurate choice.
