Rooted in Switzerland, Connected with the World

The Interessensgemeinschaft Asiatische Kultur (IAK) is a Swiss non-profit cultural association based in Bad Ragaz. Through cultural preservation, education, intercultural dialogue, and shared practice, it connects individuals, institutions, and communities from different countries and fields.

Over years of continuous development, IAK has also established a living digital academy: an open cultural and educational platform connecting its multilingual Library, Archive, Academy, Glossary, original publications, programmes, and records of cultural practice.

Through this system, people from different linguistic, cultural, and social backgrounds can encounter Asian classical wisdom, understand its cultural foundations, and explore its relevance to contemporary life.

IAK did not begin this work in order to align itself with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Rather, its long-standing commitment to cultural preservation, public education, self-cultivation, and international cooperation naturally contributes to these shared global objectives.

Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, IAK’s work is particularly connected with Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), Sustainable Cities and Communities—especially the safeguarding of cultural heritage (SDG 11), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). Through intercultural dialogue, IAK also supports the broader vision of peaceful and inclusive societies expressed in SDG 16.

SDG 3 — Good Health and Well-being

Modern life offers unprecedented access to information and technology, yet it also brings accelerated rhythms, technological overload, isolation, and growing pressure upon the human mind.

Material progress alone cannot answer the enduring questions of how to live, how to cultivate inner balance, and how to relate harmoniously to oneself, others, and nature.

Through the Health & Happiness Ecosystem initiated by IAK founder Jian Geyang, classical approaches to self-cultivation enter into dialogue with contemporary understandings of human well-being. Chinese philosophy, breathing culture, Daoyin, Taiji, Qin practice, meditation, and the cultivation of body and mind are understood not as isolated techniques, but as interconnected ways of understanding and caring for life.

IAK preserves the cultural foundations of these traditions, interprets them across languages, and makes them accessible for learning, reflection, and everyday practice. This work supports human well-being through culture and education; it does not replace professional medical or psychological care.

IAK and IBF: A Partnership for Breathing and Well-being

The formal partnership between IAK and the International Breathwork Foundation (IBF) was established on 24 September 2022. The agreement recognises the alignment of the two organisations’ missions and core values and commits both partners to reciprocal collaboration in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Since July 2016, IBF has held Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Through its United Nations Workgroup, IBF promotes conscious breathing and develops initiatives aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The partnership creates a meaningful bridge between Asian traditions of breathing and self-cultivation and an international network of contemporary breathwork knowledge and practice. It also provides a clear and documented connection between IAK’s cultural and educational work, IBF’s international network, and their shared commitment to the UN 2030 Agenda.

IAK is also officially listed among IBF’s partner organisations.

SDG 4 — Quality Education

The United Nations defines SDG 4 as a commitment to ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

For IAK, education is not limited by age, nationality, social position, or the walls of an institution. Learning is a lifelong process through which knowledge gradually becomes understanding and practice.

Inspired by the classical principle of You Jiao Wu Lei — education for all without discrimination — IAK makes its cultural and educational resources freely accessible to readers around the world. Its digital platform brings together guided readings, classical sources, multilingual publications, cultural research, educational programmes, and records of living practice.

IAK’s commitment to quality education also extends into classroom practice. For two consecutive years, IAK has collaborated with the International School Rheintal (ISR), introducing students from diverse cultural backgrounds to Asian culture, classical arts, and approaches to self-cultivation through experiential learning.

This cooperation allows students not only to receive information about another culture, but also to encounter it through listening, observation, dialogue, and artistic practice. It demonstrates how cultural heritage can enter contemporary international education in an accessible, thoughtful, and living form.

The IAK Academy does not treat classical knowledge merely as something to be memorised or displayed. Its deeper purpose is to explore how people learn, how they live, and how they may become more complete human beings.

Artificial intelligence and digital technology can help organise, preserve, and transmit knowledge. Yet culture continues only when it is understood, practised, and embodied by people.

SDG 10 — Reduced Inequalities

Cultural inequality is not determined only by whether information exists. It is also shaped by who can find it, who can afford to access it, in which languages it is available, and whether its central concepts can be understood without distortion.

Many concepts from Asian classical traditions cannot be communicated accurately through direct word-for-word translation. Terms such as Dao, De, Qi, Ren, Li, Xin, and Tian carry philosophical, historical, and practical meanings formed over centuries.

The multilingual IAK Glossary therefore provides more than definitions. It creates an intercultural entrance into these concepts, helping readers understand both their original contexts and their relevance to contemporary life.

Together with the IAK Library and Archive, the Glossary supports more equitable access to cultural knowledge across linguistic, geographical, and economic boundaries.

A digital cultural commons does not mean removing cultural origins or intellectual responsibility. It means preserving knowledge responsibly, acknowledging its sources, interpreting it carefully, and making meaningful access possible for a wider public.

SDG 11 — Sustainable Cities and Communities

Sustainable communities are built not only through physical infrastructure, but also through memory, identity, knowledge, and a living relationship with cultural heritage.

Target 11.4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals calls upon societies to strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

IAK contributes to this goal by preserving classical texts, cultural interpretations, original publications, recordings, images, educational materials, and records of living cultural practice within its digital Archive and Library.

Its work includes not only well-known philosophical traditions, but also the language, music, breathing culture, customs, aesthetics, and forms of self-cultivation through which cultural memory continues to live.

Digital preservation is especially important for forms of knowledge that are scattered across languages, communities, personal experience, and inherited practice. By organising them within a multilingual and interconnected structure, IAK helps protect cultural memory from fragmentation and disappearance.

At the same time, cultural heritage cannot remain only in files, databases, or collections. Through courses, gatherings, music, calligraphy, reading, dialogue, and everyday practice, IAK brings preserved knowledge back into living relationships between people.

Rooted in Bad Ragaz and connected internationally, IAK demonstrates how a local cultural association can preserve global heritage while enriching the cultural life of its own community.

SDG 17 — Partnerships for the Goals

No living culture can be sustained by one person or one institution alone. It grows through relationships: between teachers and students, tradition and modernity, local communities and international networks, and people from different professions and cultural backgrounds.

IAK’s partnerships extend beyond individual projects. They are built upon shared values, mutual respect, and a long-term commitment to cultural preservation, intercultural education, human well-being, and international exchange.

Each formal partnership is established through a written cooperation agreement and aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its relevant Sustainable Development Goals.

IAK’s partners come from the fields of culture, education, health and well-being, community development, hospitality, academia, craftsmanship, and international exchange. Together, they form a growing network through which knowledge, experience, cultural memory, and living practices can be shared.

Through these partnerships and intercultural encounters, cultural dialogue can foster mutual understanding and help create the conditions for peaceful and inclusive communities. In this way, IAK’s work also supports the broader vision expressed in SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

The United Nations describes SDG 17 as a call to strengthen global partnerships and encourage cooperation among public institutions, civil society, and other sectors. As an independent Swiss non-profit cultural association, IAK contributes in its own field by connecting people, knowledge, cultures, and communities.

From Cultural Preservation to Living Practice

The value of a cultural association lies not only in the activities it organises. The value of a digital archive lies not only in how much information it preserves. What matters is whether knowledge can still be read, understood, discussed, shared, and lived.

IAK brings together five closely connected forms of work: supporting human well-being, opening access to lifelong education, reducing barriers to cultural understanding, preserving cultural heritage, and building partnerships that transform knowledge into shared practice.

IAK is more than an association, a digital platform, an academy, an archive, or a series of cultural events. It is a living cultural ecosystem in which each part supports the others.

Ancient wisdom becomes part of humanity’s shared cultural wealth not by losing its roots, but by remaining rooted while becoming understandable, accessible, and meaningful to people across cultures.
