From October 17–21, 2025, the Beijing International Intangible Cultural Heritage Week was held in Beijing’s sub-center under the theme “Intangible Cultural Heritage Enriches Our Life.”
At the invitation of the Embassy of China in Switzerland and the China Cultural Center in Bern, the IAK Culture Association Switzerland represented Switzerland as part of the national cultural delegation.Under the guiding concept “Nature · Health · Symbiosis,” IAK curated the Swiss Pavilion, blending traditional Swiss heritage, AromaStick natural therapy, and everyday aesthetics — becoming one of the highlights of the entire event.
An International Gathering of Heritage and Dialogue
The 2025 Beijing International Intangible Cultural Heritage Week, hosted by the Beijing Municipal Government, brought together outstanding cultural legacies from 61 countries and regions, creating a global platform for exchange at the Grand Canal Museum, Beijing City Library, and Green Heart Forest Park. During the week, more than 100,000 visitors participated in exhibitions, workshops, and live demonstrations, where the spirit of dialogue extended from the stage into every corner of the event.
Contemporary Expressions of Swiss Heritage
Within the theme “Intangible Cultural Heritage Enriches Our Life,” IAK translated Swiss intangible heritage into an experiential and interactive form — showcasing how Swiss culture embodies a deep symbiosis between humanity and nature. The exhibition featured the Swiss Stone Pine (千年石松) as a symbol of vitality and longevity, while the AromaStick natural inhaler, developed by Swiss pharmacist Jürg Singer, represented the modern application of traditional Swiss herbal therapy.
Highlights of the Swiss Pavilion included:
Traditional Swiss herbal healing and natural breathing philosophy
Hand-forged cowbell craftsmanship and Alpine pastoral rhythm
Folk singing and gathering traditions
Ecological aesthetics inspired by Heidi and rural life
The ancient Swiss Stone Pine, a plant preserved for millennia in the Alps, symbolizing harmony and resilience
An immersive “Alpine Air Experience Zone,” recreating the freshness of Swiss mountain mornings
(Swiss Stone Pine)
“Breathing is not only biological — it’s cultural,” said Jürg Singer. “The core of Swiss heritage is how we coexist with nature and live in rhythm with the mountains.”
One of the most symbolic moments came when Jürg Singer joined pharmacists from Beijing Tongrentang, a century-old Chinese herbal brand, to co-create a traditional herbal mixture using ancestral tools. This collaboration represented a living bridge between Eastern and Western medicinal heritage, embodying IAK’s mission to promote dialogue through shared practice and mutual respect.
Immersive Encounters and Public Enthusiasm
Throughout the week, the Swiss Pavilion became one of the most visited exhibition areas. The resonating cowbell sounds, Alpine songs, and the Heidi story corner evoked memories of simplicity and harmony. Visitors lined up to enter the Alpine Air Zone, exclaiming, “Now I understand how close Swiss heritage is to nature and daily life.”
Heritage as a Living Global Dialogue
Experts and representatives from China, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Romania, and Georgia emphasized that heritage must stay connected with contemporary life to remain truly alive. As Jürg Singer concluded: “Intangible heritage is not a relic of the past — it is our shared rhythm of living wisely and sustainably.”
